Kilian Community College: Learn and Live.

Case for Support

Our Mission: Who We Are
At Kilian Community College, we believe that learning is a never-ending process of developing the mind and restoring the human spirit. Kilian is a private, independent college founded in 1977 to provide non-traditional learners in the greater Sioux Falls area with opportunities for quality higher education and life-long learning. Kilian is known for its attention to the individual student.

Our Students: Who We Serve
Like most community colleges across the United States, Kilian gives a diverse community of learners the chance to earn associate degrees and certificates that will help them find meaningful jobs.  We specialize in helping the students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college or delayed entering college while they pursued other life goals such as parenting or a career.

Our student body is anything but typical. Well more than half are the first in their family to attend college and many hold full-time jobs while they are in school. The average age of a Kilian student is 29 years old.  Three-fourths of Kilian's student body is female.  Our students include moms and dads, veterans, senior citizens...in short, Kilian is a body of learners whose educational expectations, learning styles, and goals are very different than the stereotypical college student.

Our Programs: What We Offer
A non-residential campus, Kilian serves between 400 and 500 students every semester.

Kilian has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) since 1985 with a current ten-year accreditation through 2010.

The Future: Where We Are Headed
Higher education is an evolving sector in Sioux Falls as new programs and institutes vie with more established, private institutions to meet the educational needs of southeastern South Dakota. Kilian Community College knows the adult student because we've been meeting their needs for over 25 years. The College is committed to serving Sioux Falls and working in partnership with area businesses to create meaningful training and educational programs that strengthen our economy and our community. Over half of Kilian Community College graduates elect to live and work in the Sioux Falls area. The College views its role in helping them achieve their life goals as our highest calling.

To improve our educational programming, Kilian Community College must create services that are valuable and sought by today's adult learner. Opportunities for student success increase exponentially when programs and services are infused with flexibility, support services, and financial assistance. Kilian Community College's vision for the future is to become the top choice in the Sioux Falls area for the non-traditional student.

The Need for Charitable Support
Unlike most American community colleges, Kilian receives no tax funding to achieve its mission. Eighty-five percent of its funding comes from student tuition and fees, three percent from bookstore revenues, and twelve percent from other sources. The College is committed to diversifying its revenues while sustaining an effort toward an ever-improving quality of service for the residents of the area. Support from area donors who embrace similar values help the College to provide important financial and education resources above and beyond those funds derived from students' tuition and fees.
