Medical Assistants serve in a number of aspects of patient care.  They are instrumental in preparing patients for the provider by taking vitals, a brief history, and making sure the patients are comfortable.  They serve as a communication link between the physicians and the patients.  Medical assistant duties could include the following: interviewing patients, transcription, maintaining medical records, assisting physicians with exams, scheduling appointments, office management, phlebotomy and performing diagnostic tests (ex. EKG's). Medical assistants are trained in three areas of curriculum: interdisciplinary, administrative and clinical.  This allows for multi-skilled diversity in many areas of healthcare. The Early Childhood Education Associate's Degree is Kilian's newest program.  It was implemented to meet the needs of Sioux Falls and surrounding communities.  Job opportunities for early childhood teachers are growing and are predicted to have continued growth through 2014 due to more state funded preschools and more women choosing to work outside of the home.  An Associate's Degree and/or Certification is generally required for employment or advancement at child care facilities. Kilian is the only school in the Sioux Falls area to offer the Associate's Degree. AAS Early Childhood Education

Life Style Coaching
Personal trainer life coaches
work one-on-one with clients either in a gym or in the client's home.  They help clients assess their level of physical fitness and set and reach fitness goals.  Baby boomers are concerned with staying healthy, physically fit, and independent.  Moreover, the reduction of physical education programs in schools, combined with parents' growing concern about childhood obesity has resulted in rapid increases in children's health club membership.  Young adults membership has also grown steadily, driven by concern with physical fitness and by rising incomes.  Employment of fitness workers is expected to increase 27 percent over the 2006-2016 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.  These workers are expected to gain jobs because an increasing number of people are spending time and money on fitness, and more businesses are recognizing the benefits of health and fitness programs for their employees. (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006). LEARN MORE AT www.learnsiouxfalls.com.

Senior Life Coaches - The addition of this degree will provide students with an opportunity to help others live a holistic and independent life.  Employment trends are projected to increase substantially due to the increase in the number of elderly people, an age group that often has mounting health problems and that needs some assistance with daily activities and may rely on home care.  This trend reflects several other developments in health care.  Inpatient care in hospitals and nursing homes can be extremely expensive, so more patients return to their homes from these facilities as quickly as possible to contain costs.  Treatment can be more effective in familiar surroundings.  The education and support of spouses, children, friends and family networks is an added-value feature to this program.  Finally, home care has become easier and more feasible with the development of better medical technologies for in-home treatment. Direct Support Professionals (Special Needs) provide services to children and adults with developmental disabilities, as well as the elderly.  They also provide assistance with living skills development, health maintenance, medication administration, personal care and behavioral development.  Direct Support Professionals work in a number of settings including Group Homes, Day Programs, Home & Community Based Services and Vocational Rehabilitation.  Working under the direction of a Program Manager, Direct Support Professionals work to provide services that enrich the lives of those in need.  An emphasis is placed on creating a family-like environment that encourages those with special needs to experience a full life.  Direct Support Professionals assist with traditional daily and weekly activities and also advocate a fully integrated community life.
